Discipline Statement

The Bishop Amat system of school discipline embraces a commitment to the Gospel values and the goals expressed in our philosophy. We attempt, through our discipline program, to promote genuine growth of the individual, increase the individual’s respect for duly constituted authority, foster the development of Gospel values within the individual, and provide a community atmosphere conducive to learning.

Disciplinary expectations, specified in Lancer Life, our student-parent handbook, are shared in an attempt to prevent situations from occurring which are counterproductive to our goals. Should a student have difficulty meeting these expectations, we follow established disciplinary procedures. In following our procedures, we try to deal with all issues constructively through our policies, Deans, Counselors, and Disciplinary Review Board. We try to address the good of the student and the family, while considering the good of the school community.

At times, the school may judge that a student can no longer remain at Bishop Amat because the presence of the student is not a positive force contributing to the good of the student or the good of the school. This decision would be made only after fair and impartial procedures have been followed. In the process of helping the student grow to maturity, the student may be asked to participate in counseling and/or enter a period of evaluation. Through this system of discipline, we hope to reach our underlying goals of helping students to master the internal forces of their personalities and encouraging self-direction so that they will become responsible and accountable members of the community.
