Wrestling Coaches
Thomas Pierre – Head Coach
A graduate of Concordia Academy Class of 1975 and Concordia College MN Class of 1980, Coach Pierre was a regional place winner in high school and national runner-up in college. He was a linebacker and guard on the football team. Coach Pierre obtained his Masters' in Business Administration from Cal Poly Pomona in 1986 and has taught Physical Education at Giano Intermediate in La Puente for the past 27 years. He has one daughter who is a senior at Westmont College in Montecito, CA.
Coach Pierre has enjoyed 25 years as head coach at Amat. Coach Pierre's combined Dual Meet record is 406-113-4. His teams have 2 CIF-SS Dual Champions in '98 and '07 and one CIF-SS Individual Championship in '98. They also had five CIF-SS runner-up finishes in '93, '97, '00, '01, '08, 17 league championships and 8 runner-up league finishes. Pierre's individual wrestlers have 80 CIF-SS places, 12 CIF-SS titles, 21 California state qualifiers and 4 state place winners.
David Barbosa - Assistant Coach
Coach Barbosa is a 1969 graduate of Bishop Amat. He has served as an Amat wrestling coach for the past 23 years. As a student-athlete at Amat, David lettered in wrestling for three years and was an all-league selection. In addition, he was a member of the freshman and junior varsity football teams. Eighteen members of Coach Barbosa's family have graduated from Bishop Amat. He earned a BA from Azusa Pacific in 2007, and has been an altar boy at Our Lady of Guadalupe, Irwindale for the past fifty-five years.
Larry Landless - Assistant Coach
Coach Landless is a graduate of Mark Keppel High School where is lettered in wrestling. He also wrestled at Rio Hondo College. Coach Landless competed as a mixed martial arts fighter as well as officiates and judges for the Ultimate Fighting Championships
Phil Poirier - Assistant Coach
Coach Poirier is an alumni of Bishop Amat, Class of 2004. He was a letter award winner in wrestling and captain of the team. He graduated from Rio Hondo College with a degree in Administration of Justice. Coach Poirier's dad is also an Amat alumnus, Class of 1971, and his sisters’ are alumni, Class of 1999 and 2001. He is happy to be coaching at his alma mater.
