Welcome to the Bishop Amat High School Band & Color Guard page! Our mission is to create a balanced program of educational instruction that promotes participation in and appreciation of music to engage the minds and enrich the lives of all students. Through a variety of musical experiences, we encourage our students to reach a high level of musical excellence and become life-long, intelligent music advocates, participants, and patrons.

Performing Ensembles
Students in the Department of Instrumental Music can participate in any of our diverse and dynamic performing ensembles:
- Marching Band and Color Guard: Experience the excitement of performing at football games, parades, and competitions. Our Marching Band and Color Guard work together to create visually stunning and musically captivating performances.
- Winter Drumline: Focuses on precision and rhythm, this ensemble showcases the talents of our percussionists in an exciting and competitive format.
- Winter Color Guard: An extension of our fall Color Guard, this ensemble performs intricate routines indoors, combining dance, flag, rifle, and sabre work.
- Concert Band/Wind Ensemble: Perform a wide range of music from classical to contemporary. This ensemble is perfect for students who enjoy a more traditional band setting.
- Jazz Band: Explore the world of jazz with this ensemble, playing everything from big band standards to modern jazz compositions.
- EnsemBELLS (Handbell Choir): Unique to our program, this choir offers students the opportunity to perform beautiful handbell music, adding a distinctive sound to our concerts and events.
Meet Our New Director of
Instrumental Music & Marching Band
Bishop Amat Memorial High School is delighted to welcome Mr. Joseph Bazyouros (‘94) as our new Director of Instrumental Music and Marching Band. Mr. Bazyouros brings a wealth of experience from his extensive service to the Catholic Church, including his most recent positions as Director of Music at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels (2018-2024) and at the USC Caruso Catholic Center (2013-2017).
In addition to his roles as a music director, Mr. Bazyouros is an accomplished professional performer. He was a roster singer for the Los Angeles Master Chorale for over fifteen years, performing at prestigious venues such as Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl under the baton of renowned conductors like Gustavo Dudamel.
We are excited for Mr. Bazyouros to join our community and to inspire and lead our talented musicians!
Music Courses
Our music program not only focuses on performance but also provides a comprehensive education through various courses designed to enhance musical knowledge and skills.
Instruments (CSU/UC VAPA)
- Grade Levels: Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors
- Description: Open to any student interested in learning to play a wind or percussion instrument. This course covers musical styles, theory, and musicianship through the study of music from past and present cultures. Students will perform at concerts and school events. Enrollment is open to all students; membership in the Marching Band is not required. Marching Band members with no previous musical experience must take this course in addition to concurrent enrollment in Marching Dynamics. A supply fee is charged.
Advanced Band (CSU/UC VAPA)
- Grade Levels: Freshmen (with teacher approval), Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors
- Prerequisites: Marching Band membership, ability to read music, teacher signature required
- Description: This course is required for all band students and includes participation in concerts and marching band. Students will study musical styles, music theory, and advanced instrumental techniques. Concurrent enrollment in the Marching Dynamics course is required. A supply fee is charged.
Music Appreciation (CSU/UC VAPA)
- Grade Levels: Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors
- Description: Students are introduced to the elements of music and a historical survey of music from the Middle Ages to modern pop and rock. The course emphasizes the listening experience of selected musical examples discussed in class, enabling students to understand musical forms and analyze music with distinction
