Coaching Requirements

Play Like a Champion Today - Coaches Class

The date for our first Play Like a Champion Today Coaches’ Clinic  for the 2019-2020 school year is Sunday, August 25, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Bishop Alemany High School in Mission Hills.   This Clinic is on a Sunday, since this date works best schedule-wise for the presenters and participants. Please note that there are four clinics scheduled for the school year. The remaining three will be held in November, February and June.

This program satisfies the CIF Coaches Education requirement for coaches whether they teach or not.  The Play Like a Champion Today certification also satisfies Safe Environment training for “walk-on coaches” for three years.  After three years, the coach must complete the three-hour VIRTUS “Protecting God’s Children for Adults” program. [N.B.  See the policy change below regarding this certification after the August 25 Clinic.] As in the past, we will have personnel from our Human Resource office providing fingerprinting services.

The Clinic costs $75 with lunch included.  Schools will be invoiced for the cost of their coaches during the week following the Clinic.  Note that this is a procedural change. Schools are not to send a check beforehand to cover the cost of their coaches nor give it to a coach to pay on the day of the Clinic.  You will, however, pre-register your coaches for the Clinic.  No money and/or checks will be received from the coaches on the day of the Clinic.  Money will only exchange hands after an e-mail is sent to each principal confirming the attendance of their coaches on the day of the Clinic, followed-up by an invoice for payment for these coaches. If your high school does not cover the cost of your coaches for attendance at this Clinic, then you must make your own arrangements for reimbursement for the cost of their participation.

IN ADDITION

Please emphasize with your coaches that in order to satisfy the CIF Coaches Education requirement and the Safe Environment training, coaches must remain for the entire Clinic.  At the end of the day, coaches complete an exit form.  It’s the completion of this form that validates their full participation in the Clinic and qualifies them to receive Certification.   This Certificate will be sent to the principals for dissemination to their coaches within a few days after the Clinic. This Certificate also needs to be placed in their personnel file. Also, please tell the coaches to arrive at the Clinic in sufficient time to sign-in and be seated at the time the Clinic is scheduled to begin, i.e., 11:00 a.m. The Clinic will start and end on time!

Due to the certification requirements for participation in this Clinic, no coach will be admitted to the Clinic after 11:15 a.m.  No exceptions! Also, this is a fully interactive workshop.  Besides the inter-communication with presenters and coaches, written work is also incorporated.  Please inform your coaches to bring a pen with them to the Clinic.  For those requiring fingerprinting services, an I.D. must be presented.

IMPORTANT POLICY CHANGE REGARDING “SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING” EFFECTIVE AUGUST 26, 2019

Beginning the day after the August 25 Clinic, the Safe Environment training incorporated into the Coaches’ Clinic will no longer satisfy the VIRTUS requirement by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.  All coaches will be required to take the full three-hour VIRTUS “Protecting God’s Children for Adults” training to begin their coaching assignment.  The Safe Environment training currently included in the Coaches’ Clinic will continue its emphasis on specifics pertaining to coaching.  Remember:  this policy goes into effect the day after the August 25 Clinic and does not affect those coaches who attend the August 25 Clinic.
