Wrestlers Polanco and Escobedo Reach State CIF Podium

Congratulations to California State Placers Marcos Polanco (132 PDS) 4th place and Guillermo Escobedo (184 PDS) 6th place!
This past weekend, 560 of California’s best wrestlers converged at the Rabobank arena in Bakersfield to compete for a state medal and stand on the coveted CIF State podium. Junior Juan Lopez (145 PDS), Junior Marcos Polanco (132 PDS), and Sophomore Guillermo Escobedo (182 PDS) represented Bishop Amat, accumulating enough points to outperform all of the San Gabriel Valley area wrestling powerhouses who were ranked ahead of Amat in the State rankings.
Sophomore Guillermo Escobedo (182 PDS) who had been ranked number 9 in the state went 3-0 at the start of the tournament before getting into trouble in his fourth match, losing 1-0 to the wrestler from Everett Alvarez. The loss put him in the consolation rounds and the difficult task of winning one in order to place. Escobedo battled through the Folsom wrestler, beating him 7-3, securing a spot on the podium. Escobedo overpowered his next opponent from Turlock high school, winning by a score of 9-3. Escobedo was then faced up against the number 4 seeded wrestler Ryan Cosio of Temecula. Escobedo found himself, losing 6-3 in the third period and scored a reversal bringing the score to 6-5. The time ran out before Escobedo could turn the opponent for additional points and suffered the loss. Escobedo finished the tournament by placing 6th. A great accomplishment for the young sophomore.
Junior Marcos Polanco (132 PDS) had an incredible performance at the state tournament. After winning his first three matches, Polanco suffered a tough loss to his Southern Section opponent from Edison. The loss placed Polanco in the consolation elimination round and was faced with last year’s 7th place state placer from number one Buchanon high school. Polanco came in scoring the first takedown and did not let off the gas pedal. Polanco aggressively held his opponent to one point and eliminated the wrestler from the tournament by winning the match 3-1. Polanco followed up with a pin against his next opponent from Del Oro and a decision against Clovis North, 5-2. The win placed Polanco in the medal round for 3rd place. Polanco wrestled the University of Wyoming commit Chase Zollman of Poway. The first period ended 0-0, but Polanco got himself into trouble in the second period, allowing Zollman to score 4 points. Polanco lost the match by a score of 7-2, securing the 4th Place finish.
Great job to all the state qualifiers and their incredible accomplishment!
