Wrestlers Medal at State meet

The Bishop Amat wrestling team culminated the season with three Lancers placing and medaling at the CIF State Championship tournament.

Christian Nunez, Marcos Polanco, Adrian Rios and Guillermo Escobedo qualified to compete at the tournament after all four placed at the CIF Masters tournament the previous week. Adrian Rios gave the Lancers valuable team points, by wrestling three tough matches at the 145 pound weight class. Rios won an exciting match against his opponent from Beyer high school 3-0 before losing his last match of the season against Central high school. Senior Marcos Polanco won his first 3 matches, dominating his opponents to reach the semi-final match where he lost in the last seconds by a score of 3-1. Polanco finished the tournament by medaling and placing 6th in the State.

An incredible performance came from Junior Guillermo Escobedo. Escobedo (220 Pds), after winning his first two matches, lost a tough match against his rival from Villa Park high school by a score of 3-2 dropping him to the consolation bracket. In the first consolation match, Escobedo came close to elimination when he went triple overtime against his opponent from Victor Valley high school. With the score tied 1-1, Escobedo managed to score on his opponent with a reversal and beating his opponent with seconds left by a score of 3-2. Escobedo won the remaining three matches to medal and place 3rd in the State. Escobedo went 6-1 overall in the tournament.

The standout wrestling performance for Amat this weekend came from Senior Christian Nunez at the 126 pound weight class. Nunez won all of his matches leading up to the semi-finals against a tough opponent from Gilroy high school. Nunez showed his resilience throughout the year, nursing a knee injury which slowed him a bit during the grueling tournament. Determined, Nunez fought off a leg attack from his opponent in the last seconds to win by a score of 3-2 to advance to the finals match under the spot light. Nunez, found himself wrestling the number 9 ranked wrestler in the nation from Esperanza high school. Nunez gave a valiant effort and lost by a score of 8-4. Nunez finished the tournament by medaling as the number 2 wrestler in the State of California.

This was another incredible season for the Lancer wrestlers. The Lancers not only repeated as Mission League champions, but crowned nine league champions, nine individual CIF division medalists, one CIF division champion, four CIF Masters medalists, two CIF Masters Champions, and three State medalists. The biggest accomplishment was the Lancers winning and repeating as CIF team dual champions, finishing the season undefeated with a record of 17-0.
