CLOTHING IA (CSU/UC VAPA) (One semester; Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors)
This course provides students with an introduction to basic apparel design and construction skills. Students will develop an awareness of fabrics, patterns, sewing machine operation and various sewing techniques used in quality clothing construction, explore the history and development of apparel, and apply color theory and elements and principles of design while creating their own articles of clothing and accessories. Projects include a hand-sewing craft, an up-cycled t-shirt bag, a lined tote bag, and pajama pants / shorts. Students purchase their own supplies and fabrics for the tote bag project and the pajama pants project. MATERIALS FEE REQUIRED
CLOTHING I (CSU/UC VAPA) (Two semesters; Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors)
Clothing I will provide students with an introduction to apparel design and construction skills. Students will become familiar with hand-sewing techniques, sewing machine and serger machine operation, and basic and intermediate apparel construction skills needed to complete a garment from start to finish. Multi-level sewing techniques include taking accurate body measurements, hand-sewing stitches, seam construction, sewing darts, zipper insertion, and hemming. Students will explore the history and development of apparel, and apply color theory and elements and principles of design, while creating their own articles of clothing and accessories. Projects include a hand-sewing craft, an up-cycled t-shirt bag, a lined tote bag, pajama pants / shorts, a zipper bag, a skirt or hooded jacket or top, and a garment of your choice. Students purchase their own supplies and fabrics for the major projects. MATERIALS FEE REQUIRED
CLOTHING II (CSU/UC VAPA) (Two Semester; Sophomore, Junior, Senior)
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Clothing I In Clothing II students will further explore the historical and cultural influences on fashion and apparel, explore the application of elements and principles of color and design in garments, and continue their understanding of how garments are designed through the use of advanced sewing construction techniques and different types of fabrics. Major projects will focus on the use of a variety of fabrics- such as knit, nap, and plaid fabrics. Students will complete five apparel or accessory projects, and create a portfolio of advanced sewing construction technique samples. Students will also explore career opportunities within the Fashion & Merchandising Industry. Students purchase their own supplies and fabrics for the major projects. MATERIALS FEE REQUIRED
FASHION DESIGN, TEXTILES AND APPAREL (CSU/UC VAPA) (two semesters; Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors)
PREREQUISITE: successful completion of Clothing I recommended This course is designed to provide students with foundational knowledge for careers in fashion design, textile design, manufacturing and merchandising. Concepts explored include the elements and principles of fashion design, color theory, historical fashion trends, textile design, creating custom apparel, and apparel analysis. Students in this course will use elements and principles of design to analyze other designers’ works in addition to creating their own original designs. MATERIALS FEE REQUIRED.
CHILD DEVELOPMENT I (CSU/UC elective) (Two Semesters; Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors)
Child Development is a course in which students gain and apply theoretical knowledge of the developmental stages of children from the prenatal period through age seven, as well as an awareness of the many responsibilities of parenthood. Topics include parenting, pregnancy, prenatal life, childbirth, heredity and environmental factors, and the evolving physical, social-emotional and intellectual development of infants, toddlers, pre-school, and school age children. Throughout the course, students will research and demonstrate developmentally appropriate responses, practices and activities that can be used by parents and care givers to aid in the development of the child at various ages. Students who are planning to major in Child Development in college, or who wish to further their understanding of children, should consider this course.
