November 2025 Parent Newsletter

Message from the President

Dear Parents,

Please take a few moments to review the contents of this month’s newsletter which, despite the extended Thanksgiving holiday, proves to be a very busy month on our campus.

November at Amat is auction month! Much gratitude goes to those parents who were able to attend our pre-auction showcase nights to see the various items that will go up for bid starting Monday, November 3 and continuing through November 17. Thank you in advance for your support of this important school fundraiser!

Saturday, November 15 is our annual Open House. We invite you to encourage families of current eighth graders and prospective transfer students to join us for the information session at 9:00 a.m., followed by guided tours and opportunities to learn more about our academic, extracurricular, and campus ministry programs. Your support in getting the word out to future Lancer families is greatly appreciated.

In the same spirit of gratitude, THANK YOU to all Bishop Amat moms and dads. We are blessed by your continued partnership and support of our school’s mission and educational programs and are most glad to have you as part of the Amat family.

Wishing you a joyful and blessed Thanksgiving,

Richard Beck
President

Mr. Scott's College Corner

Colleges Visiting Bishop Amat

College representatives have begun visiting Bishop Amat to talk with students about their campuses. Students should listen to announcements and check the posted information about these visits. Students interested in meeting with admissions evaluators must make appointments in advance with Mr. Scott, the College Counselor. He is available during breaks and after school in the College Center, located in the 400 wing.

College Applications

Applications for the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems are currently in progress and should be completed online. During homeroom last month, seniors received information about applying to colleges, and counselors met with all their senior students individually. The deadline for both the CSU and UC systems is December 1; private college deadlines vary.

College Application Workshops

College Application Workshops are being offered to assist students with their college applications. Mr. Scott and our counselors will be available to help students in Room 402 from 3:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. on November 4, 12, and 19. Students should bring their Chromebooks and unofficial transcripts to these sessions.

FAFSA Workshop

The FAFSA workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, November 5, at 6 pm in the library. This year's FAFSA is now available.

Amat Athletics

Our Varsity Football Team is ranked #6 in the San Gabriel Valley with a 5-4 record as they are wrapping up league play. We are finishing strong as we head into the playoffs. Our final home game is against Serra on Halloween! Kudos to Ryan Salcedo who became #2 in the Amat record books for rushing yards in a single game.

Girls Volleyball placed second overall in league play. They are ranked #1 in the San Gabriel Valley with a 30-8 record. The team moved up in the CIF playoffs to Division 2 where they fell to Eleanor Roosevelt in the opening round. Congratulations to our Del Rey First Team All-League Athletes: Sophia Silva, Lauren Meza and Sanai Serverloh. Second team honorees went to Christa Sullivan and Allyson Lo. A special congrats to Sanai who garnered the prestigious Del Rey League MVP honors!

Girls Flag Football is another highly ranked San Gabriel Valley team with an overall #2 ranking. The team captured the Santa Fe League Championship with a 5–0 record (23–6 overall) and made an impressive run in the CIF Division 2 Playoffs, where they upset the No. 1 seed before falling just short in a hard-fought 7–8 loss to Newbury Park in the quarterfinals. We are immensely proud of this team’s historic first season and the standard they have set for the future of Amat Flag Football!

Girls Tennis finished the strong Del Rey League play with a 4th place finish.  They will head into the league finals with hopes of advancing a few players to the CIF Playoffs.

Girls Golf is poised to make noise in the CIF playoffs for 2025! The team finished 2nd overall in Camino Real play with an 8-2 record. All Camino Real league members are: Victoria Rubio, Natilyn Gutierrez first team and Ema Arreguin, Izabella Perez second team.

Boys and Girls Cross Country ramped up their season in October. With strong competition over several invitational meets, the team is poised to win the Del Rey League championships! The girls’ team is ranked #9 overall in CIF Division 4.

Winter sports season begins November 11th. Our winter sports include Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Soccer and Boys and Girls Wrestling.  Good luck to them all!

Remember, in order to participate in any athletic activities at Bishop Amat, all students must have Athletic Clearance. Any questions should be directed to the Athletic Department.

Campus Ministry

Emmaus Junior Retreat

Our junior class kicked off our school retreat season with their Emmaus retreat last month in October.  Led by our senior Faith In Action (FIA) leaders, our juniors had an amazing experience out in Silverado, walking with Jesus as they prayed and thought about the deeper meaning behind what it means to journey with Jesus. While the weather started off a little wet on the first day, the sun came out and treated our retreat goers to a beautiful view of the southland as we celebrated Mass together led by Fr. John.

If your junior wasn’t able to make it this semester, mark your calendars because our next Emmaus retreat will be March 10-12, 2026.

Kairos Senior Retreat (November 18 - 20)

Registration is now open for November’s Kairos retreat.  This retreat, designed for our seniors, is a three day experience that will help strengthen our senior’s relationship with God and the world around them. We strongly encourage any seniors involved in winter or spring activities to attend this session of Kairos.

Those parents who are interested in sending their senior on Kairos will need to attend a mandatory meeting, Tuesday, November 4th at 6:30 pm.

Permission slips are located outside the Campus Ministry Office and you can sign up and pay for the retreat ($300) at the following link:

Caritas Service Retreat

On November 5 & 13,  our Sophomores will be on their Caritas Service Retreat at the LA Foodbank, where they will prepare thousands of food boxes for people in need. Let's include them in our prayers.  Virtus certified parents who wish to chaperone, please contact Mr. Kasilag at bkasilag@biishopamat.org.

Christian Service

Fall Food Drive

The Social Studies Department is sponsoring our annual Fall Food Drive. This is our biggest food drive of the year!  Our goal is to put together food bags and then deliver them to families in need before the Christmas Break.

Shoes that fit

From November 3 to December 3, the Christian Service Office is sponsoring the Shoes That Fit Drive for deserving students in local elementary schools.  We will deliver the shoe gifts before the Christmas Break. A separate announcement will be made as soon as the names of kids with their shoe sizes are posted on the Christian Service bulletin board.

Family Ministry Events

November Family Evening of Reflection

Family Virtue Discussions

Virtue Spotlight: Tenacity
Definition:
The strength to persist and endure in difficult situations, to keep striving toward a goal, no matter the obstacles or setbacks. It’s the will to remain faithful to your purpose and to keep pushing forward when things get tough, driven by the hope and trust in God's plan.

Suggested Reflection-Discussion Questions:
1. Think of a time when you experienced a challenge. How did you find the strength to persevere?
2. How can we as a family encourage one another to stay strong when faced with difficulties?
3. What role does prayer play in helping us remain tenacious during struggles?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help our family to always remain faithful to our purpose of growing in your love. Amen.

Tuition and Semester Exams

It is hard to believe that the first semester exams will be administered in just about 6 weeks!  As a reminder to all parents, your FACTS tuition account must be up to date in order for your student to sit for semester exams.  All students take Part A exams; tuition accounts must be current in order to take Part B exams.  Students who do not take Part B exams will earn a grade of Incomplete “I” and no credits in each class in which an exam is missed.  This will affect a student’s eligibility to participate in extracurricular activities.

As a reminder:  If you need to make an adjustment to a payment date, you must contact Mrs. Gomez in the Finance Office at least 72 hours in advance of the withdrawal date.

Financial Aid Application for 2026-2027

Starting in November, the financial aid process for the 2026-2027 school year will begin.  Applications for both the Catholic Education Foundation and Bishop Amat financial aid will be available on the Bishop Amat website.  Please be sure to adhere to all posted deadlines.

Infirmary Volunteers

Parent volunteers are needed to work in our Infirmary on a daily basis.  If you are Virtus trained and are interested in earning parent hours in this capacity, please contact the Attendance Office at 626-962-2495 ext. 7440 or send an email to attendance@bishopamat.org. Thank you in advance for volunteering!

From the Attendance Office

Over the past couple of weeks, we have seen an increase in student illness.  As a reminder, if your student is experiencing any symptoms, especially a fever, he/she should stay home to avoid getting others sick.

Additionally, if your student begins to feel sick during the school day, please remind them that they should not sit in a classroom potentially getting others sick.  Instead, they should come to the Attendance Office where we will make parent contact and will be able to quickly release him/her.

Here are some other important Attendance Office reminders:

  • All students arriving on campus after 8:10 am MUST check in at the Attendance Office.  Students who fail to check in are subject to a dean’s detention.
  • If arriving on campus after 8:50, the student is considered absent for the first block and a signed absent note should be provided.  It can be emailed or sent with the student to be submitted when checking in.  If the student does not have a signed parent note, he/she is still expected to check in at the Attendance Office.
  • A student should never leave campus without checking out at the Attendance Office.   This is considered truancy.  For emergency purposes, it is extremely important to know exactly which students are on campus at all times.
  • Early Dismissal requests should be dropped off by the student at the Attendance Office by 8 am.  Be sure to include the name, ID number, time and reason for the early dismissal.
  • Early Dismissal requests can also be emailed ahead of time to attendance@bishopamat.org.
  • Students cannot be pulled for early dismissals during break, lunch or scheduled activities (i.e. assemblies, retreats, Mass, picnics, etc.)
  • Please do your best to ensure that your son/daughter has his/her lunch and personal belongings before leaving the house in the morning.  Per school policy, we do NOT accept lunch deliveries for students.
  • Please ensure that your student’s name is on his/her belongings (i.e. books, lunch bags, hydroflasks, backpacks, sweatshirts, etc.) so that the item can be returned to him/her if it is lost.
