March 2026 Parent Newsletter

Message from the Principal

Dear Parents:

The annual Bishop O’Connell Memorial Footprints fundraiser, benefitting Catholic Charities (San Gabriel Region), takes place Saturday, March 14 from 9 am - 11:30 am in Kiefer Stadium. Students who participate in the event earn double Christian Service hours due to the importance we place on this event. We also hope that many of our parents and siblings will come along to have fun, enjoy the morning, and partake in the games and entertainment that will be provided.

We choose to partner with Catholic Charities because of their important work helping those experiencing extreme poverty with emergency and basic needs assistance. They provide resources for food, clothing, temporary shelter through motel vouchers, transportation, specialized rental and utilities assistance programs for low-income families, and on-site assistance with application for CalFresh benefits.

It would mean so much if you joined us on March 14, or contribute in the way of a small donation if you have other commitments (TICKET LINK). The event will include activities for young children, live music, opportunities to win prizes, and most importantly, the chance to come together in fellowship to support a worthy cause. I sincerely hope you will make plans to attend. Feel free to bring a friend along!

God Bless,

Gabriel Escovar
Principal

Teacher Communication Week

During Teacher Communication Week (March 2–6), our teachers will be reaching out to parents/guardians to strengthen communication about student progress. Families of students currently earning a D or F in a course can expect to receive an email from the teacher that includes a grade update, available tutoring opportunities, and additional support resources.

We value your partnership in supporting student success. If you receive an email, we encourage you to review the information carefully and reach out to the teacher with any questions or concerns.

2026-2027 Course Registration

The registration process continues with our current juniors and then our freshmen. Counselors will soon wrap up meeting with juniors individually to discuss their course requirements, choices for the next school year, and summer school options. The class of 2027 has their signed registration form and any other necessary forms are due by March 6. All forms will be turned in to their counselor. Counselors will begin meeting with freshmen in their homerooms on March 4 (forms due March 26).

As a reminder, counselors will meet with students individually to discuss which classes they might want to take and to ensure they meet the prerequisites for those classes. However, it is up to the student and parents to choose courses and alternate classes (please view our course catalog here) that may be needed to resolve conflicts when schedules are finalized. Both parents and students must sign the registration form before submitting it to the student’s counselor.

College Information Needed

A display is being set up in the main office to recognize seniors for their college acceptances. If you would like your child to be included, please have them bring a copy of any acceptance letters to Mr. Scott, our College Counselor. His office is located in the 400 wing.

We would also like to provide information about college scholarships that seniors have been awarded in this year’s graduation program.  Copies of award letters should be given to Mr. Scott no later than Friday, April 17. All scholarships should be included, even if they are from colleges students have decided not to attend.

Campus Ministry

Use Lent To Draw Closer To God

Lent is a spiritual season of renewal. It is a time to hit the "pause" button on our busy lives and focus on what truly matters. As we journey together toward Easter, we want to remind our students of the many wonderful opportunities available right here on campus to strengthen their faith and find a little peace in their day.

Whether they are looking for a quiet start to their morning or a spiritual recharge during lunch, there is a place for everyone:

  • Tuesday 7:35 am: Morning Mass  (Chapel)
  • Wednesday 7:35 am: Rosary Prayer  (Chapel)
  • Wednesday During Lunch: Midday Mass (Chapel)
  • Thursday 7:35 am: Morning Mass  (Chapel)
  • Friday During Lunch: Stations of the Cross (In-between 400&500)

These moments are perfect for any student wishing to grow closer to God this season. Taking just 20 or 30 minutes to pray or attend Mass can transform a student's entire outlook, providing clarity, comfort, and strength for the week ahead.

"Lent is a fitting time to deepen our spiritual life through the means of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving."

We encourage you to chat with your children about these options. It’s a great way for them to embrace the Lenten spirit alongside their peers and teachers!

Christian Service

Clothing Drive

During the whole month of March, the World Languages Department will be sponsoring a Clothing Drive to support the Society of St. Vincent De Paul and other local charitable organizations.  All donations should be gently used clothes, placed in sturdy bags and dropped off with any World Language teacher.  This is a great opportunity for students to earn Christian Service hours.

Family Ministry

Family Virtue Discussions

Virtue Spotlight: Contentment
Definition:
The strength to find peace and joy in what one has, trusting in God's providence rather than longing for more.

Suggested Reflection-Discussion Questions:
1. Why does contentment lead to deeper joy rather than settling for less?
2. How can gratitude help strengthen contentment in your life?
3. How does trusting in God's providence help combat dissatisfaction?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help our family to find peace, joy, and gratitude for the many blessings in our life.  Amen.

Family Ministry Lenten Afternoon of Reflection

On Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at 3 pm in the Chapel, Family Ministry will host an afternoon of reflection. Join us to set aside some time for reflection and prayer as a family this Lent.  All students attending will receive one Christian Service hour.  Parents attending will receive one parent hour per family.  Please fill out this form in order to RSVP.  If you have questions please contact Ms. Nicole Pfiester at npfiester@bishopamat.org.

Reminder! Parent Hours are due by April 30.

Be aware – April 30 is fast approaching.  This is the deadline to complete parent hours for the 2025-2026 school year.

Earn Development Hours

Golf Tee Sponsorships

Support the Golf Tournament and earn parent hours through sponsorships:

  • Purchase 3 Tee Sponsorships: Earn 10 Development Hours + 20 Regular Hours (30 total hours)

From the Finance Department

Registration Fees

Please be reminded that the Registration Part I Fee of $400 will be withdrawn from your FACTS account on March 13.  This Fee tells us that your student will be re-enrolling at Bishop Amat for next school year (2026-2027).  The school bases hiring of teachers on the number of students who register.

For families who are not sure if their student will be returning - request Mrs. Gomez to change the date that the registration fee will be withdrawn from FACTS.  Please note that after March 13, the registration fee increases to $450, and after April 13 increases to $500 and will be charged as such.

2026-2027 FInancial Aid

Families requesting financial aid for the 2026-2027 school year - if your income has not changed dramatically, you will most likely receive the same amount of financial aid as you did in 2025-2026.  We will not be able to tell families the amount of financial assistance they will receive until at least the middle of April.  We are waiting on CEF and our other Foundation donors to let us know the grant amounts that the school will receive for financial assistance.

Important Reminders

Blood Drive

Our Spring Blood Drive, sponsored by The City of Hope, will take place on Monday, March 23 from 8 am – 2 pm in the SAC.  Parents wishing to donate blood will receive ONE parent hour.  Please be sure to bring your ID to check-in at the front office and receive a visitor’s pass before heading to the gym.  If your son or daughter is planning to donate blood, be sure to remind him/her to bring an ID and to eat a healthy breakfast in the morning.

Discipline Department

Recently, we have noticed an increase in dress code violations by our students.  We are asking that parents assist us in correcting this by checking their students daily and ensuring they are following our guidelines.  Specifically, we are having issues with:

  • Unshaven (boys)
  • No polo/uniform shirt
  • Non Amat sweatshirts
  • Skirt lengths

As a reminder, per Lancer Life, these types of dress code violations will result in the student being sent home to change or to make necessary adjustments prior to being allowed back to class.  Your assistance with this to avoid your student having to miss class is greatly appreciated!

Infirmary Volunteers

Parent volunteers are needed to work in our Infirmary on a daily basis.  If you are Virtus trained and are interested in earning parent hours in this capacity, please contact the Attendance Office at 626-962-2495 ext. 7440 or attendance@bishopamat.org.  Thank you in advance for volunteering!

Important Reminders from the Attendance Office

If your student is absent from school, a parent-signed note is required to clear the absence as “verified”.  The note can be emailed to attendance@bishopamat.org or dropped off at the Attendance Office when your student returns to school.

If your student arrives at school anytime after 8:10 am, he/she MUST check in at the Attendance Office whether or not they have a signed parent note.  Failure to check in at the office will result in a dean referral.

When making an Early Dismissal request, it is best to do so early in the morning or as early as possible as the office personnel is limited in the afternoons and may not be able to process requests as quickly as they can in the mornings.

If your student is sick, he/she should come to the Attendance Office to call home.  This will prevent others from potentially getting sick and he/she will be ready to leave once someone is sent to pick him/her up.

As a reminder, only parents are authorized to allow their student to leave school early.  Individuals on the “emergency list” are only allowed to pick up the student after the parent has authorized their release.
