Christian Service Program

Bishop Amat Christian Service Program

A.  Christian Service Projects

v  Each year students will complete at least five experiences of Christian Service.

v  The service should be 4-5 hours in length and may be done at a onetime event or be ongoing.

v  Students need to participate in at least one project from each of the following five categories.

v  Although a service project may fall within two or more categories (for instance a community service project sponsored by a Church) students may not count the same service project for more than one category.  HOWEVER if a student is consistently doing work with a particular organization, the work done on different dates or for extend time may fulfill different categories.

v  Service hours are counted from May 1, 2011-April 30, 2012 for the 2011/2012 school year.

v  In order to receive credit for the project students must fulfill all the requirements, responsibilities and commitments of a volunteer to the satisfaction of their supervisor/teacher.

v  With the exception of categories #1 and #2 (the class based service projects) students may count service done over the previous summer, as long as verification can be obtained.

v  Students must complete their service with an organization from the list provided by the school, or one that has been approved by the Christian Service Moderator or Campus Minister BEFORE completing your service.

v  Only one of your yearly service projects may be indirect service as defined later in this packet.*

B. Stewardship

Students need to participate in one of the various school wide drives.  Students are to obtain the signature of their teacher when they turn in their donated items.  How much students give is up to them; we only ask that they contribute to the drives!  NOTE: MISSION COLLECTIONS ARE NOT CONSIDERED DRIVES.

C. Family Component

Parents or an adult family member need to participate in at least one of the Christian Service projects with the student.  Students will be asked to briefly interview their parent or guardian as part of the yearly reflection.

D. Daily Christian Service

Being a disciple of Christ is not a weekly or occasional practice; rather it is a way of life.  In fact the earliest name given to Christians was “People of the Way.”  Early Christians often went against the grain of society, especially in their generous treatment of those in need of help.  Christian Service is more than just a requirement to be checked off; it is a daily calling.  In order to help you reflect on this, we ask that you select one of the Corporal Works of Mercy and one of the Spiritual Works of Mercy to focus on during the this school year.  At the end of the year we will ask you to reflect on your experience living out the Works of Mercy that you selected.

E. Reflection

Each year students will complete a reflection on the service they have done.  During the 2011/2012 school year, this reflection will be turned into their Christian Service Mentor by April 19, 2012.

*Indirect Service Description:

  • Any form of fund-raising activity in which the student did not create, organize, implement and supervise the fund-raiser and directly interact with the organization receiving the funds.
  • Any material contribution to the collecting of goods for any of the above organizations that does not include distribution of the goods to those for whom they were intended.
  • Letter-writing as advocacy
  • Clerical work – filing, data entry, returning books to a book shelf, folding flyers for a mailing

Activities that are NEVER considered for direct or indirect service hours:

  • Work done at for-profit businesses.(other than hospitals and retirement homes).
  • Attendance at a conference in which there is no implementation of skills/knowledge accrued in some sort of community-based project with a nonprofit organization.
  • Baby-sitting for relatives and family friends.
  • Activities in which there was some sort of trade off or payment
  • Activities in which a parent, relative or student is the only supervisor
  • All forms of duty within a family and/or extended family
  • Political activity. (Unless it is expressly endorsed by the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops)

Christian Service FAQs

  1. Where can I serve?
  • You can serve at any agency our pre-approved list of agencies found on the AMAT Christian Service website under “service opportunities”.
  1. What if I want to do my service at an agency or do a project not on the pre-approved list?
  • You must get approval from the Christian Service Moderator or Campus Minister by filling out a Service Organization Approval Form at least a month before you intend on beginning your service.
  1. If another student has gotten approval for a service project at an agency not listed on the pre-approved site of non-profit agencies, do I still have to seek approval?
  • Yes, you do. Each student has to get their own petition signed by the Christian Service Moderator or Campus Minister.
  1. How do I keep track of my hours so that I can receive credit for the time spent volunteering at my service site?
  • Be sure to record your hours in the AMAT Service Verification packet, found in the Campus Ministry Office, the Christian Service Office, some Religion classrooms and the Library, and obtain correct signatures.
  1. Can I complete 80 hours in one year and have it count for my entire graduation requirement?
  • NO. You must complete at least 20 hours of service at an approved site each year that you are at AMAT.  We begin counting service from May 1 of the previous year to April 30 of the current school year.  Any hours done over the minimum amount required yearly will be added to the student’s record.
  1. Can I work at the same non-profit agency all four years?
  • YES. In fact, commitment to one agency is encouraged as long as it fits the AMAT service criteria.
  1. Do hours working in an office of a non-profit organization doing filing and other types of office work count as direct service?
  • NO. You need to work directly with those being served. Doing office work for a non-profit is considered indirect service. Remember only one of your projects may be indirect service.
  1. Can I be a coach or tutor and have it count toward my direct service hours?
  • Yes, as long as it is for an approved agency and you do not receive compensation.
  1. Can my AMAT hours count for my Confirmation program? Can service done for my Confirmation program count toward my AMAT Service Graduation requirement?
  • Yes. As long as it follows the AMAT service criteria. Be sure to use an AMAT Verification form.
  1. Can I work at home caring for family members and receive credit for direct service?
  • NO. Service must be at a non-profit agency that is pre-approved. Service to members of one’s family is done freely, as an expression of love. Visits to relatives who are infirm and in a care facility also do not count as service hours. Service to a sibling who is disabled or sick is also not counted. On the other hand, contact with agencies which serve a family member can lead to potential service opportunities. Also, students have created service clubs on campus that seek to inform, educate, fund-raise and create opportunities for service in the wider community. Often, those opportunities have been grounded in the student’s personal experience with family members.

  1. Can I do service off campus during the school day?
  • Generally, NO, Unless the event is sponsored by the school, such as the Food Bank Project.
  1. What if I don’t do the required number of hours?
  • You must make up your service hours during the summer school session.  At the conclusion of the academic year, students who have not achieved the minimum number of service hours, suitably verified, will receive a notice from the Service Coordinator’s Office, sent to their parents to notify them of the discrepancy in our records. If by the time of senior graduation, the student still has not fulfilled the AMAT service requirement (for 2011 and 2012, it will be 60 hours, form 2013 on, it will be 80 hours), the student will not receive their diploma and the student transcript will note that graduation requirements have not been fulfilled.
  1. Does time spent traveling to and from a service activity count as part of my total service hours? What about if I stay overnight or an extended amount of time? Do I count the entire time I’m there?
  • Time spent traveling to and from a service site does not count as part of the service; only the time doing service is counted or credited as service hours. Nor does time spent sleeping and eating while involved in a long term service activity, unless meals are being shared with those being served.
  1. Are meetings or training to prepare for service counted as part of the total time spent doing service?
  • NO.
  1. 15.  If I work with a single organization throughout the year, may I count that service for more than one category?
  • YES!  Let’s say you volunteer with Adopt a Grandparent for 20 hours.  That would fulfill your School Community Service, Community Service, and Faith Based Service categories.  It may also fulfill your Religion Department Service and your Across the Curriculum Service depending on the requirements of your teacher.
  1. 16.  If I have an interest in a particular type of service or working with a particular group of people may I count that for more than one category?
  • YES.  If you enjoy working with, say children, then by all means participate in service projects that involve interaction with children.
  1. I’m still unclear about the difference between Direct and Indirect service. Is there any kind of activity that doesn’t count for either?
