Available Program Services

The following is a list of services and programs available to students registered in the Inclusion Program. Your student’s individual educational program will be based on the recommendations determined to best help your student succeed. Please note that some of the optional programs available to you (denoted by “*”) may have fees in addition to your Inclusion Program registration. Reasonable accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis according to each student’s individual documentation. Accommodations are made to provide students with disabilities access to classroom information and expression of their knowledge. They do not compromise the essential requirements of a course.

Common Special Accommodations Explained:

  • No Scantron Test – Scantron format is too difficult for some students. Alternative testing methods such as oral testing, handwritten answer sheets, or marking directly on tests can be used.
  • Extended Time on Test – Due to slower, documented reading, processing, comprehension, and writing rates, students are legally entitled to extended time on tests. This may be done by allowing students extra time slightly before or after test administration per teacher discretion, and Inclusion Staff are available to assist.
  • Written Instructions – Written instructions reinforce teacher directions and help students to understand and complete assignments.
  • Use of a Tape Recorder – A tape recorder can be an invaluable tool that enables students to successfully process, comprehend, and store incoming information. Students should be encouraged to concurrently take notes.
  • Tests Read Orally – Student mentors may provide assistance with this time-consuming but important accommodation, and Inclusion Staff are available to assist.
  • Note Taker – Note taking with carbon sheets or a photocopy of the notes provides a reasonable adaptation for students who would otherwise be unable to transcribe information. A copy of the teacher’s notes/outlines can also be emailed to the Learning Specialist.
  • Enlarged Print – Enlarged print is a necessary aid to enable qualified students to read efficiently and/or interpret written material, e.g. math, maps and to provide students with extra room to work.
  • No Reading Aloud Unless They Volunteer – A simple task for most students can be a humiliating experience for those with reading difficulties.
  • Color Transparencies – For some students, transparent colored sheets facilitate extensive reading. Books on Tape – This service may be obtained by qualified students through Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexics/Orton Dyslexia Society. Upcoming titles of novels and textbooks should be submitted by students for recording with at least six weeks notice.
  • “In Class” Essay (alternative) – Some students who struggle with written assignments benefit from one period of oral brainstorming and one period to write the essay.
  • Distraction – Free Environment for Testing – Classroom environments may be too over-stimulating and prevent some students from demonstrating their knowledge. The testing center is available for this purpose
