Lancer Life is the Bishop Amat High School Parent/Student Handbook. It contains information regarding school policies and procedures as well as a calendar of events for the school year. The Principal reserves the right to change information, policies and procedures listed in this handbook.

An open house for parents and prospective students will be held Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 9:00 A.M. .

A standardized exam is given to all freshmen applicants to help determine their strengths, weaknesses, and ability to handle our curriculum. The next exam will be given on Saturday, January 30, 2010. The registration fee of $60 is payable in the school office. The registration deadline is January 15, 2010.

Bishop Amat enrolls approximately 1500 young men and women.

Students may come to Amat by car or bus. Parking on campus is limited.
Tuition and fees are determined annually. Tuition for the 2008/2009 school year is $6100 per year for the first child. Tuition is payable in advance, or in 11 monthly installments payable in July through May. A registration fee of $250 is payable upon acceptance. This fee is non-refundable should the student not attend Bishop Amat. A participation fee of $350 which includes yearbook and raffle donation, is due in June.

Books are purchased by the student and are available through the school online bookstore. For most freshmen, the cost of new books is approximately $400.

The school provides a wide variety of supervised social activities during the school year. Such activities are generally sponsored through one of the organizations within Student Government. These include service projects, school projects, as well as school sponsored dances.

A student is eligible for the 9th Grade of Bishop Amat High School provided that the student has satisfactorily completed elementary school requirements and shows the ability to be academically successful in high school. Because Bishop Amat is not able to take all qualified students, preference in admission is given to (1) students previously involved in Catholic Education, (2) families active in the Catholic Community. We do admit some non Catholic students whom we deem capable of benefiting from our school environment.

Each 9th grade student is required to take the STS High School Placement Test the first Saturday in February before entrance into High School. Students accepted, yet scoring below a certain level on the placement test, may be required to take and pass a summer session at Bishop Amat prior to the fall entrance.

Students applying for grades other than 9th are required to submit a copy of transcripts from the school previously attended, as well as recommendation letters as indicated on the application. Final acceptance is dependent upon satisfactory completion of the previous school year as well as summer school, if it was required. Applications for transfer students must be in the school office by May 15.

Bishop Amat High School has established open enrollment policies in concert with the California Interscholastic Federation State Rule 222 with the following conditions:

  • Bishop Amat is a Catholic, coeducational high school whose philosophy and mission are based on the call of the United States Bishops, "To Teach as Jesus Did."
  • Bishop Amat accepts students on a space available basis.
  • Bishop Amat charges tuition for the educational services.
  • Bishop Amat has admissions requirements pertaining to academic standards and behavior.
Bishop Amat High School, mindful of its mission to be a witness to the love of Christ for all, admits students of any race, color and national and/or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. Bishop Amat High School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, and national and/or ethnic origin in administration of educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs.

It is the policy of the school that all students take the required religion curriculum. In these classes, all students are graded on academic achievement and not on their religious affiliation, personal belief or the practice of their faith. All students are required to attend the general religious activities of the school although participation in worship services is not demanded of non-Catholic students.

All parents are expected to be active in the Parent Association. They must also commit to a total of 30 hours of service to the school under the Parent Assistance Program. Participation in such organizations as the Booster Club and the Helmut Club is highly recommended.

The Bishop Amat campus was built through the generous support of parent donations to the Cardinal McIntyre School Building Fund in 1957. Each addition to the campus since has been funded through similar generous sacrifices by the families of students. Parents of current students are asked to continue this support with a minimum pledge toward our Development fund of $360 per year for the first four years of a family's enrollment.

Please be aware that we place the following minimum expectations upon students who attend Amat. There is a mandatory meeting with parents of incoming students in the fall of the school year to discuss these points.
  • Respect for the religious beliefs of the Catholic Church, its moral principles and liturgical practices (respect does not imply adherence by those who are non-Catholic).
  • Respect and care for the property of the school, including adherence to standards of campus order and cleanliness.
  • Respect for the person and property of others, including faculty members and fellow students.
  • Adherence to the standards of the school as set forth in Lancer Life, including the requirements of dress and hair codes.
  • Non-toleration and non-acceptability of drug and alcohol abuse.
  • A basic attitude of respect for those in authority.
  • Regular attendance and participation in class.
  • A dedication to study and learning in accord with the ability of the individual student.
